I totally forgot to mention that Kodi was born in a barn and for the first 8 weeks of his life prior to coming to our home, he lived outside in a large shed that looked like a small house. He lived in that space with his parents, 2 brothers and 1 sister. He had never been inside a human home and had free run of a large grassy enclosure. Most of last week he was pretty mellow, he laid around and slept nearly all day long with little bouts of energy where we would go outside and reinforce ‘potty training’.
We have over 1.5 acres of land so we would walk him around the fenced in property while on a leash. I really wanted to make sure that we got him used to being on a leash at all. He fought it a first and I get it that he just didn’t understand what it was. He would just stand there and look at us like “what the heck is this thing”. It took some coaxing, but he would eventually trot along out to the dog enclosure we built for him. He would sit inside it for the longest time and not understand that we wanted him to ‘do his business’ in there.
The dog pen is actually pretty cool. What started out as an idea to fence in a spot in the yard for the dog to go to keep the poop and pee from ending up all over the property morphed into a full-blown condo for the dog. LOL. The first few days we were taking him to the enclosure to go to the bathroom, (which he just wasn’t having) to me realizing a full week in that we were basically training him to go the bathroom in his ‘living space’. The pen is far too nice of an area for that, so we selected another area for that.
Within a week we had installed solar powered spotlights around the perimeter and string lights on the inside. It really is a party tent for the pup.
